SZ Photo - Battles in the high mountains of the Caucasus, 1942
Fighting also took place in the Caucasus as part of Operation Edelweiss, which was intended to capture the oil fields around the city of Baku. During the summer and fall months, the Wehrmacht was able to take the Elbrus massif with the highest peak of the same name. In particular, mountain infantry units ensured the successful advance. In the winter months of 1942-43, the Wehrmacht had to retreat again and the high mountains fell back into Soviet hands. - This selection contains pictures from our partner agency Süddeutsche Zeitung Photo.
