SZ Photo - Operations between the Don and the North Caucasus, 1942
During the German summer offensive of 1941, three German army groups under Wilhelm List were sent south and southeast along the lower Don in July. After taking the entire Crimea, Wehrmacht soldiers crossed the Kerch Strait and also took part in the Caucasus campaign. Despite rapid territorial gains and the hoisting of the swastika flag on the Elbrus (the highest mountain in the Caucasus), the objectives could not be achieved. From December 1942, the German troops had to retreat again. - This selection contains pictures from our partner agency Süddeutsche Zeitung Photo.
