Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)
The Catholic nun and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa was born on Aug. 26, 1910, in what is now Skopje (northern Macedonia); she died on Sept. 5, 1997, in Calcutta. The nun became known worldwide as the "Angel of the Poor" through her work in the slums of the Indian city of Calcutta. In 1950 she founded the Order of Missionaries of Charity there. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her extraordinary commitment. In 2003, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II, followed by canonization under Pope Francis in 2016.
