The Atomium in Brussels
Built for the 1958 World's Fair, the Atomium has become a landmark in Brussels. From April 17 to October 19, 1958, more than 41 million visitors came to the Expo and marveled at the walk-in spherical construct: an iron crystal with nine atoms, magnified 165 billion times, 102 meters high and weighing 240 tons. A total of five of the nine spheres, each 18 meters in diameter, are accessible. The spheres are connected by tubes 23 to 26 meters long with escalators inside. There are also steep staircases painted red that are popular for photo shoots. Belgian engineer André Waterkeyn designed the Atomium as a symbol of scientific progress and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Many of the light objects were designed by the German industrial designer Ingo Maurer. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
