The boxers rebelliion
Attention: Graphic Content Resistance to growing foreign rule and the influence of foreign powers in China culminated at the turn of the century in the so-called Boxer Rebellion (18.10.1899 - 07. 09.1900). The armed conflict between the secret society Yi-he tuan (Association for Law and Unity, known in the West as the "Boxers" because of their martial arts) and an alliance of Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Austria-Hungary, Russia and the USA claimed more than 100,000 lives. The climax of the uprising was the assassination of the German envoy Klemens Freiherr von Ketteler on June 19, 1900 and the siege of the legation quarter in Beijing from June 20, 1900. The uprising ended on August 14, 1900 with the occupation of Beijing by an expeditionary force from the Eight States. On September 7, 1900, the "Peace Agreement between the United Eight States and China", the Boxer Protocol, was signed. China undertook to pay high compensation payments and had to allow the states involved to station troops.
