Asbestos contamination and demolition of the Palace of the Republic

After German reunification, the Palace of the Republic was closed in 1990. Investigations revealed significant asbestos contamination in the building.

Renovation was discussed, but the final decision was made in favor of complete demolition. This took place in stages between 2006 and 2008.

Today, the reconstructed Berlin Palace stands on the site, housing the Humboldt Forum.
