V for Victory: A sign of success
Cheering, and cheering appropriately - that's something that more than a few soccer fans failed to do recently at the European Championship. And yet the most famous hand gesture for victory - similar to the ball sport - is said to have originated in Great Britain. At least that is the legend. We are talking about the Victory sign. It is closely associated with former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. According to various reports, he first had the sign propagated in a radio address on July 19, 1941. The date is a milestone on the way of a gesture to the symbol of the fight against Nazi Germany.
