70 years of lollipop pilots in Germany On 14 January 1953, the idea of a crossing guard service born in the USA was also introduced in the Federal Republic of Germany. The introduction can be traced back to an initiative of several partners, including the German Road Safety Association (DVW). Today, the DVW is solely responsible for the further development of the training concept and for equipping the traffic assistants with service clothing. The police are mainly involved in pilot training, while the schools play a major role in the appointment of pilots. The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) supports the project financially. Nationwide, around 50,000 people are currently active as lollipop pilots.

Stuttgart 21 – protests The disputes surrounding Stuttgart 21 were among the largest civil protests in recent German history. In addition to demonstrations and occupations, there were also large-scale police operations, which resulted in injuries and extensive security measures. The counter-movement also succeeded in having construction and procurement activities temporarily suspended as part of the arbitration process, and in 2011 a statewide referendum was held on the further financing of the project.
