100 years ago: Palestine under British Administration (League of Nations Mandate) (2022-07-24)
On July 24, 1922, the League of Nations Mandate was ratified, placing Palestine under British administration. - The Zionist movement at the end of the 19th century was publicly supported by Great Britain with the Balfour Declaration (1917): In it, Britain agreed to establish a "national home" for the Jewish people in Palestine, while preserving the rights of existing non-Jewish communities. During World War I, British troops conquered Palestine in 1917/18. The country became a British Mandate territory, confirmed by the League of Nations in July 1922. Growing immigration of mainly European Jews led to cultural and political tensions, unrest and uprisings. In 1947, Great Britain returned the mandate. Although the UN General Assembly adopted a partition plan for Palestine in November 1947, it was rejected by the Arab states and led to the Zionist-Arab civil war. On May 14, 1948, British troops left Palestine. On the same day, David Ben Gurion proclaimed the independent state of Israel.
