Weimar Republic - Foundation of the Republic
After the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the proclamation of the Republic on November 9, 1918, a provisional government ("Council of People's Deputies") was formed the following day under the chairmanship of Friedrich Ebert (SPD). On November 19, the election for the constituent National Assembly took place, in which women were allowed to vote for the first time. The National Assembly constituted itself in the National Theater in Weimar because of the revolutionary conditions in Berlin. Friedrich Ebert was elected the first President of the Reich and Prime Minister Philipp Scheidemann formed the first cabinet of the Weimar Republic, a coalition of SPD, Zentrum and DDP. On July 21, 1919, the National Assembly adopted the Weimar Constitution, which came into force on August 11.
