Where Kings Holiday: The Summer Residences of the European Royals
Where do kings actually go on holiday? Only scant information leaks out of European palaces; royal holidays are usually private, they say. When it comes to summer holidays, most European royals prefer royal residences in their own countries. Horseback riding, walks, church visits - for Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, it's business as usual. In keeping with tradition, the 94-year-old spends her summer holidays at her Scottish country estate, Balmoral Castle. Buckingham Palace does not reveal details. King Felipe VI is traditionally staying in Mallorca with Letizia and her daughters Leonor and Sofía. Former King Juan Carlos and his wife Sofía as well as Felipe's sister Elena and their children are also on holiday in the Marivent Palace near Palma. The Swedish royal family traditionally spends part of their summer holidays together on the island of Öland, where Solliden Castle is located. Crown Princess Victoria's birthday on 14 July is often the starting point for this. In mid-July, Queen Margrethe and her husband Henrik moved into their summer residence, Gravenstein Castle, in southern Jutland near the German border. This year, the monarch also spent a few days there with her sisters Benedikte and Anne-Marie.
