WKI - Dardanelles Campaign 1915
Because the Dardannellen Strait could not be conquered by the Allies at sea, British, French, Indian, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand troops (ANZACS) attempted to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915. After a nine-month battle, the troops withdrew again. The Turkish victory is regarded as the first major success of commander Mustafa Kemal, who later became the founder of the Turkish Republic Atatürk. The anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli is still celebrated today in Australia, New Zealand and Tonga as a national day of remembrance (ANZAC Day).
