WWI - The outbreak of the First World War

Triggered by the fatal shooting of the Austrian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand by Serbian nationalists in Sarajevo, World War I began with Austria/Hungary's declaration of war on Serbia on July 28, 1914. Kaiser Wilhelm II stood by Austria's side as an ally and on August 1, the German Reich declared war on Russia, followed by the French on August 3. The mobilization was accompanied by a wave of national enthusiasm, especially in the major cities, and countless young men, not only in Germany, volunteered for military service.
