WKI - Submarine warfare

The submarine war was triggered by the British trade blockade against Germany from November 1914. Contrary to applicable maritime law, German submarines sank British and neutral merchant ships in the North Sea, Atlantic and Mediterranean without any warning. After the sinking of the Lusitania, in which numerous Americans also lost their lives, the naval war was initially restricted by Germany in order to avoid the USA entering the war. However, the advocates of unrestricted submarine warfare (from February 1, 1917) were able to assert themselves in the German Empire. Despite initial great successes, the German naval war strategy did not work out. On April 6, 1917, the USA entered the war. Moreover, the anti-submarine defense became better and better. In the end, the German navy had lost around half of its submarines. In total, more than 30,000 people lost their lives in the submarine war, and several thousand warships and, above all, merchant ships were sunk.
