WKII - Battle of Iwo Jima,1945 (War in the Pacific)
During the Battle of Iwo Jima from February 19 to March 26, 1945, U.S. forces captured the strategically important Japanese island in the Pacific. The landing operation, which was particularly bloody and also resulted in heavy losses for the U.S. Marine Corps, is considered one of the most significant battles in the Pacific War. After intensive bombardment, the Americans had landed on the island on February 19 and met fierce resistance from the well-prepared Japanese defenders. On February 23, the U.S. flag was raised on the summit of Mount Suribachi. This scene became known worldwide through the Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal, which became one of the most famous war photographs and also the template for the United States Marine Corps War Memorial.
