WWII - Red flag on German Reichstag - 1945 (iconic image)
On April 30, 1945, Red Army soldiers raised the red flag with hammer and sickle on the top of the Reichstag. Shortly thereafter, on May 2, 1945, the battle for Berlin ended. It was on this day that the world-famous photograph by Soviet photographer Yevgeny Khaldei was taken. It was a staged re-enactment of the historical events at the storming of the Reichstag by the Red Army. The photo became a pictorial icon - and has its own exciting story.
