WWII - Katyn massacre 1940
After the Red Army invaded Poland, on April 3, 1940, units of the Soviet People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) began the systematic murder of Polish officers, intellectuals and members of other elites. Within the following six weeks, some 22,000 Polish prisoners were executed near the western Russian town of Katyn and at other locations. In the spring of 1943, units of the German Wehrmacht found mass graves with more than 4,000 bodies in the Katyn forest near the city of Smolensk. The Soviet Union denied perpetration and blamed German troops. It was not until 1990 that then Kremlin leader Mikhail Gorbachev admitted that Soviet dictator Josef Stalin had given the order for the massacre. Since 2007, April 13 has been the annual Katyn Memorial Day in Poland, the day German radio publicized the 1943 massacre worldwide.
