Weimar Republic - Black-Red-Gold - Flag Controversy in Weimar 1919
On February 18, 1919, the Weimar National Assembly decided to adopt black, red and gold as the national colors. The decision was highly controversial and led to the so-called flag controversy in the following years, which lasted until the 1920s. Monarchists and the anti-republican right favored the former imperial black-white-red flag, while the extreme left preferred the red revolutionary flag. Black-red-gold was the symbol of the democratic constitution of the moderate forces. Already after the foundation of the German Confederation (1815) and during the revolution of 1848, these colors stood for a united, free Germany. Since 1949, they have also been the national colors of the Federal Republic of Germany.
