Weimar Republic - Spartacus uprising in Berlin 1919
In the Berlin revolutionary turmoil following the end of World War I, a communist revolutionary committee led by Karl Liebknecht had declared the government of Social Democrat Friedrich Ebert deposed on the night of January 6, 1919. A few days before the election to the National Assembly on January 19, 1919, mass demonstrations in the imperial capital then escalated into open civil war. By January 12, government troops put down the so-called "Spartacus Uprising." Numerous people died or were injured. The most prominent victims were Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, who were captured and murdered on January 15.
