WWII - Battle of Dunkirk 1940
During the German campaign to the West, the port in Dunkirk (Dunkerque) was the last bridgehead for the withdrawal of the Allied troops. When the German advance could no longer be stopped in May and June 1940 (Battle of Dunkirk), the allied troops were evacuated in an unprecedented rescue operation. Operation "Dynamo", carried out with over 1,200 ships, was disrupted but not prevented by the German Luftwaffe, so that ultimately more than 330,000 of 370,000 soldiers were rescued. The city of Dunkirk was conquered by the German Wehrmacht on June 4, 1940.
