Zeppelin, Ferdinand Graf von
The airship designer Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin (08.07.1838 - 08.03.1917) is one of Germany's most famous aviation pioneers. The first steerable rigid airships ("Zeppelins") developed by him were used in civil aviation from 1908 and for military purposes during the First World War. After von Zeppelin's death, further large airships were built in the 1920s and 1930s. Among the best known are the "Graf Zeppelin" (LZ 127) and the "Hindenburg" (LZ 129), which exploded on its approach to Lakehurst on May 6, 1937.
