Two years after the collapse in Novi Sad
On November 1, 2024, the canopy of the main train station in Novi Sad collapsed, burying people who were waiting beneath it. Sixteen people died. Two years later, thousands gathered in front of the station, laid down flowers and candles, and observed 16 minutes of silence. The Novi Sad disaster had triggered an unprecedented wave of protests across Serbia against the government of long-time President Aleksandar Vučić, who has now been voted out of office. An independent commission attributed the cause to deficiencies in the renovation and corruption in the contracting process. No court-confirmed indictment has been filed to date.
