Vor 125 Jahren, am 13. Mai 1897, stellte der Italiener Physiker und Erfinder Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937 die erste kabellose Nachrichtenverbindung her. Sie ging über 5,3 km von der britischen Insel Flat Holm im Bristolkanal über das offene Meer nach Lavernock Point (Wales). Marconi gilt einer der Pioniere der Telekommunikation. 1909 wurde er für seine praktischen Arbeiten im Bereich der Funktelegrafie gemeinsam mit Ferdinand Braun mit dem Nobelpreis für Physik ausgezeichnet.
