Am 6. Januar 2021 hatten Anhänger des damaligen republikanischen Präsidenten Donald Trump das Kapitol angegriffen. Aufgehetzt worden waren sie durch Aussagen Trumps, dass ihm die Wahl gestohlen worden sei. Mehrere Menschen kamen bei den anschließenden Unruhen ums Leben. Gegner warfen Trump vor, einen beispiellosen Angriff auf das Herz der amerikanischen Demokratie angezettelt zu haben.
