2026-12-10 - Vor 90 Jahren - Englands König Edward VIII. dankt ab

1936 war ein ganz besonderes Jahr für die britische Monarchie. Anfang des Jahres, am 20. Januar, wurde der Playboy und britische Thronfolger Edward, genannt David (1894-1972), zum König von Großbritannien und Nordirland gekrönt. Keine elf Monate später, am 10. Dezember, dankte Edward VIII. schon wieder ab. Und alles wegen «dieser Frau», wie seine Mutter Queen Mary die Geliebte seines Sohnes nannte: Wallis Simpson (1896-1986). Der damals 41 Jahre alte König verzehrte sich nach ihr. Ein unerhörter Skandal: Wallis war nicht nur bürgerlich, sondern überdies Amerikanerin und zweimal geschieden.
