Kater "Larry" - Zwölf Jahre im Dienste der Regierung

Larry übertrifft die Premiers: Dass Boris Johnson nicht derjenige ist, der in der jüngeren Geschichte am längsten in der Downing Street wohnte, ist klar. Margaret Thatcher regierte immerhin elf Jahre. Doch auch die «eiserne Lady» muss sich geschlagen geben. Rekordhalter ist - ein Kater. Rishi Sunak ist der offizielle Hausherr in der Downing Street. Doch der aktuelle Amtsinhaber ist nur ein weiterer britischer Premierminister, der sich mit dem heimlichen Herrscher das Haus hinter der berühmten schwarzen Tür teilen darf. An diesem Mittwoch sind es exakt zwölf Jahre, die Kater Larry im Regierungssitz residiert. Der Chief Mouser, der «oberste Mäusefänger des Vereinigten Königreichs», ist damit länger im Amt als jeder Premier seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zuletzt ließ Larry auch Margaret Thatcher hinter sich, die immerhin elfeinhalb Jahre regierte.
