Libanesen fordern höhere Renten und Gehälter

Wütende Angestellte des öffentlichen Sektors und pensionierte Armeeangehörige haben am Donnerstag (31.03.2023) in der libanesischen Hauptstadt Beirut gegen die sich verschärfende Wirtschaftskrise protestiert. Sie fordern eine bessere Bezahlung oder eine Erhöhung ihrer Rente, nachdem die libanesische Währung mehr als 95 Prozent ihres Wertes verloren hat. «Wir verhungern», riefen die Demonstrierenden bei den Protesten am Mittag. Sie versuchten, Stacheldrähte zu durchbrechen, die zum libanesischen Regierungspalast und zur Zentralbank führten. Soldaten der libanesischen Armee und die Bereitschaftspolizei wandten Gewalt an, um die Demonstranten von den Zäunen wegzudrängen. Seit Ende 2019 steckt der Mittelmeerstaat in der schlimmsten Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise seiner Geschichte. Sie wird unter anderem auf jahrzehntelange Korruption in Politik und Wirtschaft zurückgeführt.
