2027-01-01 - 25th anniversary of the introduction of the euro as cash On 1 January 2002, the euro replaced the national currency as cash in 12 member states of the European Union (EU) (Belgium, Germany, France, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Spain and Greece). In the largest money exchange of all time, the ECB put around 50 billion coins and 15 billion banknotes into circulation. The launch of the euro completes the monetary union that had begun three years earlier.

2027-01-04 - 80 years of “Der Spiegel” The first issue of the news magazine "Der Spiegel" appeared in Hanover on January 4, 1947, as the successor to the magazine "Diese Woche". Rudolf Augstein was its publisher and editor-in-chief. In 1952, the magazine moved to Hamburg. Der Spiegel stands for critical journalism and has uncovered numerous scandals over the years. In 1962, Der Spiegel itself was at the center of a scandal due to an exposé about the German Armed Forces entitled “Conditionally Ready for Defense". The print edition of the weekly magazine is published on Saturdays and currently has a circulation of approximately 700,000 copies.

2027-01-11 - 10th anniversary Opening of the Elbe Philharmonic Hall "Elbphilmarmonie" After almost 10 years of construction, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg was opened on 11 January 2017 with a ceremony and the first concert. The ceremony was attended by 2100 guests, including Federal President Gauck and Federal Chancellor Merkel.

2027-01-13 - 15 years ago - Accident of the Costa Concordia On 13 January 2012, the cruise ship "Costa Concordia" capsized off the Tuscan coast with more than 4200 people on board. Due to a risky manoeuvre, the ship had come too close to the island of Giglio and collided with an offshore rock. 32 people lost their lives.

2027-01-20 10th anniversary Donald Trump is sworn in as the 45th President of the United States On January 20, 2017, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, with Vice President Mike Pence also taking the oath of office shortly before.
