RAF - Chronology of the Terrorist Organization 1968-1998 The group around Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof, which came to prominence as the Frankfurt department store arsonists, decided on the armed struggle against the "imperialist system" with the violent liberation of Baader on May 14, 1970, and gave itself the name "Red Army Faction". Three RAF generations are responsible for 34 murders, numerous bank robberies and explosive attacks. In1998 , the RAF announced its self-dissolution.

Assassination of Rudi Dutschke, 1968 On April 11, 1968, Rudi Dutschke, one of the leading figures of the APO (Extra-Parliamentary Opposition) and chief ideologue of the Socialist German Student League (SDS), was critically wounded in the head by worker Josef Bachmann during an assassination attempt in Berlin. Dutschke survived the attack, but died of late effects on December 24, 1979.

Massacre at Munich Olympic Games (1972) On 5 September 1972, during the Summer Olympics in Munich, members of the Palestinian terror organisation Schwarzer September, which was supported by German Neo-Nazis in the run-up to the Games, took members of the Israeli team hostage. During an attempt to free them in the night of September 6th at the airport Fürstenfeldbruck, a fiasco occurred. A total of eleven Israeli hostages, five hostage-takers and one policeman were killed.

Oktoberfest Bombing 1980 On 26 September 1980, the most serious act of terrorism of the post-war period to date took place in Germany. According to the current state of investigation, the right-wing extremist assassin Gundolf Köhler placed a homemade bomb in a wastebasket near an entrance to the Oktoberfest, killing twelve people and injuring 213, some of them seriously.

Assassination of Pope John Paul II, 1981 On May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II was the victim of an assassination attempt as he drove through St. Peter's Square in his open-top Popemobile. The assassin, the Turk Mehmet Ali Agca, wounded him critically with several shots and was arrested immediately. The Pope caused a sensation when he visited the assassin in prison after his recovery in December 1984.

Herrhausen assassination (1989) The Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Bank AG, Alfred Herrhausen, was killed in a bomb attack in Bad Homburg on November 30, 1989. He was on his way from his home to his Frankfurt office when the car bomb exploded in his car. The third generation of the Red Army Faction (RAF.) claimed responsibility for the murder.

Wolfgang Schäuble shot at political rally, 1990 On 12 October 1990, Wolfgang Schäuble, then Federal Minister of the Interior, was seriously injured by two shots fired by an apparently mentally disturbed assassin during a CDU election campaign event in Oppenau, Baden. Since then, Schäuble has been paraplegic and dependent on a wheelchair.

Columbine High School massacre, Littleton 1999 In the massacre at Columbine High Scholl in Littleton, Colorado, two students shot and killed 12 classmates, a teacher and themselves on April 20, 1999.
